1/ Transparency issue: 18 Settle Club Road was on the agenda as a standard 'Notice of Intent' for construction. However, the discussion was actually an enforcement matter regarding unauthorized vegetation clearing near Vine Brook. The public wasn't warned it was a violation.

Longer-form draft.
Transparency and oversight matters at the June 9th Lexington Conservation Commission meeting.

First, a significant lack of clarity on the agenda: 18 Settle Club Road was listed as a standard 'Notice of Intent' for a construction project. In reality, the Commission spent time discussing an enforcement matter regarding unauthorized vegetation clearing near Vine Brook. Because it was listed as a routine project, residents were not given prior notice that a legal violation and a voluntary consent agreement were being negotiated.

Second, the ongoing debate over the Lexington High School project (251 Waltham St) continues to divide the room. Public commenters urged the Commission to require a redesign of the school to avoid wetlands entirely. However, the Commission moved to close the hearing, maintaining that their legal authority is limited to reviewing stormwater mitigation and pollutant loading, not the actual siting of the municipal building.

Finally, the Commission is still grappling with the multifamily development at 114 Wood Street. Due to high community concern regarding tree loss, impacts on endangered bat habitats, and invasive species, the Commission has requested more data and a revised restoration plan before the next hearing on July 14th. https://meetingwatch.org/ma/lexington/conservation-commission/2026-06-09/ #MeetingWatch #LexingtonMA
