Longer-form draft.
At the June 9 Salem School Board meeting, residents voiced growing concerns regarding the district's library material selection process.

Two community members, Kevin Gagnon and Jamie Thorncroft, addressed the board to argue that the current policy (Policy IJL) is too reactive. They suggested that instead of focusing on how to remove books once they are already in the system, the board should implement proactive age-appropriateness checks to ensure inappropriate materials do not reach students in the first place.

While the board acknowledged these comments, they did not offer a direct response or a commitment to specific policy changes during the session. The board is currently in the process of reviewing the library material selection and management policy, but the tension between resident demands for prevention and the current reactive framework remains unresolved.

We will continue to monitor the review of Policy IJL and report on any formal changes proposed by the board. https://meetingwatch.org/nh/salem/school-board/2026-06-09/ #MeetingWatch #SalemNH
