Public Comment: Elementary School Device Use
The board is reviewing elementary school device policies following public concerns regarding technology use and AI research.
- A resident testified that 1:1 device use (iPads/Chromebooks) may lead to weaker motor skills, reduced attention spans, and emotional dysregulation in elementary students. Privacy concerns regarding the 'i-Ready' app were also raised.
- The Board's response: They acknowledged the comments and noted it is a 'national topic.' However, there was no commitment to review current policies, investigate data privacy practices, or form a committee to address these specific concerns.
- As taxpayers and parents, we should look for more than just an acknowledgment when concerns about student cognitive development and data security are presented.
