split vote and dissent reasons
Quinn and Rela dissented on the church sign vote. Record shows their objection centered on multi-color deviation from established norms and concern over social-justice rationale overriding rules. https://meetingwatch.org/nh/amherst/historic-district-commission/2025-05-15/ #MeetingWatch #AmherstNH
X thread
Amherst HDC met 5/15. One item not listed on the agenda was discussion of updated Historic District regulations. Chair reported receiving revisions and assigned review of conduit painting requirements for mechanicals before any public hearing. #MeetingWatch #AmherstNH
Actions were given to Chair Doug to add language by end of next week and to Gloria to forward the document to the town attorney. No prior public notice meant residents could not prepare comments on potential new rules.
The meeting also approved a church sign 3-2 with vinyl rainbow graphic after agenda described painted black copy. Dissenters Quinn and Rela cited deviation from the two-color norm and risk of using social-justice arguments to change standards. https://meetingwatch.org/nh/amherst/historic-district-commission/2025-05-15/
At the May 15 Historic District Commission meeting in Amherst, members took up revised district regulations that had not appeared on the published agenda. The chair reported receipt of the updates and directed staff to add a requirement that conduit for mechanicals be painted to match surroundings, then send the document to the town attorney for review ahead of a future public hearing. The same meeting approved a freestanding sign for Amherst Congregational Church by 3-2 roll call. The agenda described a wood sign with painted black copy and painted graphics. The approved version used applied vinyl rainbow graphics with a satin or matte finish. Quinn and Rela voted no, citing the departure from the village two-color standard and objections to bending rules on social-justice grounds. Minutes have not yet been posted. The off-agenda regulations discussion and the mismatch between the listed sign description and what was actually considered both limited advance public awareness of the issues. https://meetingwatch.org/nh/amherst/historic-district-commission/2025-05-15/ #MeetingWatch #AmherstNH
