X thread
At the June 15 Somerville School Committee meeting, 11 residents spoke during public comment on SRO policy. They demanded the district follow its own 2023 recommendations for an off-site SLO model rather than armed officers inside schools. #MeetingWatch #SomervilleMA
Speakers pointed to state law barring police from discipline roles, disproportionate discipline data for students with disabilities and multilingual learners, and 2026 focus-group materials that assumed an SRO decision had already been made. They also flagged ignored Harvard-led student input from 2023.
The committee took no action. All comments were entered into the record for future discussion. District must still respond to open public records requests on arrests and mental-health staffing before policy talks resume. https://meetingwatch.org/ma/somerville/school-committee/2026-06-15/
At the June 15 Somerville School Committee meeting, multiple parents and advocates used public comment to press for an off-site Student Liaison Officer model instead of armed on-site School Resource Officers. They referenced the committee's own 2023 recommendations, state law restrictions, biased recent focus-group questions, and data showing disproportionate impacts on Black, brown, disabled, multilingual, and LGBTQ+ students. The committee recorded the comments but made no decision or direct response. Parents also raised concerns about the proposed 925-student Winter Hill Community School, calling the size oversized for elementary grades, inequitable compared to other schools, and unsupported by required traffic, gap, or MSBA studies. No vote occurred. All formal votes that night, including cell phone policy, high school handbook changes eliminating class rank, and summer authorizations, passed unanimously (Davis recused on $150k transfer). https://meetingwatch.org/ma/somerville/school-committee/2026-06-15/ #MeetingWatch #SomervilleMA
