Longer-form draft.
At the June 8 Somerville School Committee meeting, the community sent a clear message regarding school safety and the potential return of School Resource Officers (SROs).

During a contentious public comment period, students and residents raised significant concerns that bringing law enforcement into schools could fuel the school-to-prison pipeline and disproportionately impact students of color and immigrant families. While district leadership proposed a model centered on 'trauma-informed' officers for emergencies rather than discipline, the community tension remained high. The Committee has deferred a decision, planning to conduct focus groups and listening sessions with students, staff, and families this fall.

In other news, the School Committee voted 7-0 to approve the $123,111,384 budget for FY27. During the discussion, Committee members noted that the budget was submitted to the Mayor later than the May 15th deadline required by the new district charter. To prevent future delays, the Chair of Rules and Chair of Finance will be developing a new policy to ensure administrative compliance with the charter moving forward. https://meetingwatch.org/ma/somerville/school-committee/2026-06-08/ #MeetingWatch #SomervilleMA
