The discussion centered on how students prove competency for graduation, including ELA standards and the distinction between diplomas and certificates for special education students. This is a high-impact issue for families, yet there was no prior notice.

Because this wasn't on the agenda, parents and advocates couldn't prepare or show up to voice their concerns. Transparency matters—especially when decisions impact a student's ability to graduate. Longer-form draft.
Transparency Alert: The Salem School Committee held a significant discussion during its June 22 meeting regarding student graduation competency that was not listed on the public agenda.

Substantive discussions took place regarding ELA competency requirements, transcript requests, and the specific diploma standards for special education students. Because these high-stakes topics were not included in the meeting's public notice, residents and parents were denied the opportunity to prepare or attend specifically to voice their input on these standards.

Additionally, there appear to be significant discrepancies in the meeting record. While the agenda called for the approval of minutes from the June 8, 2026, meeting, the committee instead approved minutes from December 20, 2024.

When the committee discusses matters as vital as graduation eligibility and manages fiscal policies behind the scenes, the public deserves prior notice. We will continue to monitor how these competency standards are finalized. https://meetingwatch.org/ma/salem/school-committee/2026-06-22/ #MeetingWatch #SalemMA
