Longer-form draft.
At the April 2, 2026, License Commission meeting, the community made its voice heard regarding the proposed A1 Food Mart license transfer to 1 East Meadow Road. Residents and legal representatives raised significant alarms about the location's proximity to Saint Rita's Church and Joseph McAvinue Elementary School.

Beyond the proximity to sensitive institutions, the discussion highlighted serious safety concerns regarding the Mammoth Road/East Meadow Road corridor. Captain Peasley noted that studies already show an increase in motor vehicle accidents and citations in that specific area. Residents fear that adding a package store could worsen traffic congestion and pedestrian safety in an already high-risk zone.

In response to this community pressure, the Commission has deferred its decision. They have tasked the Police Department's Crime Analysis Unit and the Assessor's Office with providing specific data on crime, traffic, and exact distances to the school and church. The hearing is scheduled to continue on April 23rd. We will continue to monitor this to ensure the board prioritizes public safety over convenience. https://meetingwatch.org/ma/lowell/license-commission/2026-04-02/ #MeetingWatch #LowellMA
