The committee approved several upcoming trips, including travel to Rwanda, Italy, and Germany. However, members noted a major hurdle: a DESE policy change now restricts certain funds from being used for travel outside of Massachusetts.

This restriction creates a potential equity gap. Without access to these funds, the cost of international enrichment trips may fall more heavily on families, making these opportunities less accessible to all students. #LSRSD #EquityInEducation https://meetingwatch.org/ma/lincoln-sudbury-rsd/ls-school-committee/2026-05-12/

Longer-form draft.
During the Lincoln-Sudbury Regional School Committee meeting on May 12, a significant concern was raised regarding student access to extracurricular enrichment.

While the committee voted to approve several international student travel opportunities—including trips to Rwanda, Italy, and Germany—board members highlighted a growing financial barrier. Due to recent changes in DESE policy, certain funds that were previously available can no longer be used for travel outside of Massachusetts. This policy shift could make these high-impact cultural trips significantly more expensive for families, potentially limiting participation to only those who can afford the full cost out-of-pocket.

The committee is currently investigating potential regulatory or statutory ways to address these impediments to ensure that student travel remains an equitable opportunity rather than a luxury reserved for a few.

Additionally, the meeting marked a major milestone with the approval of the Regional Agreement amendment by both Lincoln and Sudbury town meetings. This amendment is a foundational document that governs how our district is formed and how its budget is apportioned between the two towns. https://meetingwatch.org/ma/lincoln-sudbury-rsd/ls-school-committee/2026-05-12/ #MeetingWatch #LincolnSudburyRsdMA
