First, the big one: Article 4 and the consent agenda—covering $10.7M in capital projects—were postponed. The Select Board cited "new information" from the Superintendent and shifting School Committee positions as the reason for this delay.

This postponement creates significant uncertainty for the FY27 school budget and essential infrastructure. Residents were unable to vote on critical items because the financial picture is still shifting behind the scenes.

Second, transparency concerns regarding the Community Preservation Act (CPA) remain. Residents asked for a comparison of the fees we pay via deed transfers versus what the town actually receives. The town could not provide this data.

Finally, concerns about long-term recreation planning were raised. With playing fields potentially lost following the high school project, the current CPA plan lacks a clear strategy for replacements. We need a plan, not just an explanation.

Longer-form draft.
The Town Meeting on April 6 brought significant uncertainty to Lexington residents regarding our fiscal future and community resources.

Most notably, the Select Board moved to postpone Article 4 and the consent agenda. This postponement, driven by new information from the Superintendent and changes in the School Committee's budget position, effectively delays decisions on a $151.7 million school budget and over $10.7 million in planned capital projects. This lack of a finalized budget position prevents residents from making informed decisions on how their tax dollars are allocated for FY27.

Transparency regarding the Community Preservation Act (CPA) was also a major point of discussion. Residents pushed for a comparative analysis of the fees Lexington families pay through deed transfers versus the actual funds the town receives back from the state. The town was unable to provide this data during the meeting, leaving a gap in our understanding of the net financial impact of the CPA.

Additionally, concerns were raised about long-term recreation planning. As the high school project progresses, there is growing worry about the loss of playing fields and the lack of a replacement strategy in the current CPA plan. We are calling for the Town Council and Select Board to provide definitive answers on these budget postponements and financial comparisons as soon as possible. https://meetingwatch.org/ma/lexington/town-meeting/2026-04-06/ #MeetingWatch #LexingtonMA
