The core issue: A proposed ordinance would cap political contributions and increase disclosures. During the vote, an amendment to protect the $1,500 contribution cap tied 6-6, failing to pass. This leaves the limits in limbo.

Rather than finalizing rules to address public concerns about 'pay to play' practices, the Council voted to send the entire Barreiro proposal back to the WRAP committee for further revision. Longer-form draft.
The Aurora City Council meeting on March 10 revealed a deeply divided leadership regarding the future of ethics and campaign finance reform in our city.

Residents used the public comment period to raise serious allegations of 'pay to play' practices, specifically questioning the relationship between city vendors and political donors. Despite these high-stakes concerns from the community, the Council did not provide a formal response to the allegations.

The debate over the proposed ethics ordinance—which includes a $1,500 cap on political contributions—was contentious. The Council was so split that an amendment to Chapter 15 resulted in a 6-6 tie. Ultimately, instead of moving forward with increased transparency, the Council voted to return the entire Barreiro proposal to the Rules and Appropriations (WRAP) committee for further work.

As it stands, the decision on how much influence city vendors can have over our elected officials remains unresolved. We will continue to monitor the WRAP committee for when these rules are brought back to the floor. https://meetingwatch.org/il/aurora/city-council/2026-03-10/ #MeetingWatch #AuroraIL
