Longer-form draft.
At the June 1, 2026, Selectboard meeting, a significant point of tension emerged regarding the lack of transparency surrounding vacation rentals in Sunapee. Residents have been seeking data to understand the impact of short-term rentals (STRs) on the community, yet the Town Manager informed the board that an ongoing lawsuit is currently delaying the processing of STR requests and the release of necessary data.

This delay leaves residents and the planning board without the evidence needed to make informed decisions about local regulations and zoning. While the board discussed potential future incentives for Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs), the fundamental question of how short-term rentals are affecting our town remains unanswered due to these legal constraints.

Additionally, the board discussed the proposed Veterans Field project. While there is interest in a new scoreboard and messaging sign, board members raised questions about whether the project is prioritizing community utility or serving as a vehicle for commercial advertisement through sponsorships.

We will continue to monitor these issues, specifically the timeline for the release of rental data and the final decision on the Veterans Field signage. https://meetingwatch.org/nh/sunapee/selectboard/2026-06-01/ #MeetingWatch #SunapeeNH
