Longer-form draft.
During the April 15 Planning Board meeting, two major issues surfaced that highlight a growing tension between town officials and Bedford residents: transparency and development oversight.

First, the board engaged in a substantive discussion regarding the feedback from the recent Town Meeting about the Cottage Overlay District. Residents have raised intense concerns regarding housing density and unit sizes, yet this discussion—which touches on the core of our town's future character—was not listed on the public agenda. When the board discusses how to handle community pushback on major zoning articles, residents should have prior notice so they can participate.

Second, the meeting addressed a perceived lack of transparency regarding development rates. In response to public claims that the Planning Board is unaware of current multifamily housing trends, the Board Chair suggested implementing better visual aids to track all active housing projects. This admission suggests that the current methods for communicating development data to the public are insufficient.

Between these discussions and the unanimous approval of a two-year extension for the life science lab project at Crosby Drive, it is clear that land-use decisions are moving forward rapidly. We will continue to monitor how the board addresses these transparency gaps. https://meetingwatch.org/ma/bedford/planning-board/2026-04-15/ #MeetingWatch #BedfordMA
